शंसेह सर्वं भद्रं ते यथा सैन्यम् इदं द्रुतम् ॥
अथ शारद्वतो राजन्न् आर्तिं गच्छन् पुनः पुनः ॥
शशंस द्रोणपुत्राय यथा द्रोणो निपातितः ॥

Then the king said this to Sharadvata [Kripa] with shame: "Tell here all -- may it be well for you -- how this army fled." Then Sharadvata, O king, falling into grief again and again, told the son of Drona how Drona was struck down.

Duryodhana "with shame" passes the bitter news to Kripa: some burdens of speech are unbearable even for a king. It is telling that Kripa too speaks it "falling into grief again and again" -- the truth of a loved one's death cannot be uttered without pain. The verse teaches that news of a dear one's death is a heavy duty, borne with grief and shame; and dignity here lies not in remaining unmoved but in fulfilling what must be done without hiding one's own sorrow.
