Consciousness — on the side of oneself, the cognised — on the side of beings, and the knower of the field — on the side of deities; the channel — their bond. Who is in consciousness, in the cognised, in the knower of the field, in the channel, in the breath, in knowledge, in bliss, in the space of the heart, who moves within all this — He is this very Self. Him let one revere — the unageing, immortal, fearless, sorrowless, endless.

The ninth triad, and it falls out of the row: consciousness, the cognised, and “the knower of the field”.
In all the previous triads the deity was a person of the universe: the sun, the earth, Varuṇa, the wind, the moon, Brahmā, Rudra. Here is named kṣetrajña — “the knower of the field”, that is, the soul itself living in the body. The field is the body and the world; the knower of the field is the one within it.
The change is telling. Having reached citta, the capacity to be conscious, the Upaniṣad finds nothing outside commensurate with it: consciousness has no luminary of its own. Its correspondence is only the conscious one.
This is the limit of the row. There is nowhere further to go outward; everything that could be set opposite has been set. And therefore in the following triads the speech will be no longer of perception but of action: speech, hands, feet.
Note, however, that even “the knower of the field” here is not yet the one who is to be revered. What is to be revered is He who is in consciousness, and in the cognised, and in the knower of the field himself. The soul is named — and at once set in one row with the rest, as a place where He moves.
