The list continues, but now it takes not man, but the rite and its celestials.
Named are the classes of gods: the Ādityas, the Rudras, the Maruts, the Vasus, the Aśvins — that is, the whole Vedic pantheon by its groups. Named are the three Vedas by their kinds of utterance: ṛcs, yajuses, sāmans. And named is the sacrifice itself by its parts: the mantra, the fire, the offering of ghee.
All this is Nārāyaṇa.
What is said is at once affirming and sobering. The rite is not declared empty: it is called Him. But the gods to whom the rite is addressed are called Him as well. So the sacrificer, the offering, the fire and the one to whom it is offered are not four standing over against one another.
This is an old thought of the Veda, carried here to a single word. The Gītā will say the same at greater length: the oblation is Brahman, the fire is Brahman, the offerer is Brahman.
And two words are added, explaining why it is so: udbhava and sambhava — “arising” and “origination”. He is named that from which everything rises and that which everything becomes. Hence one may enumerate anything at all — the answer will be one.
This passage Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa adduces in the Govinda-bhāṣya when examining who is the bestower of the fruits of sacrifice: not the gods to whom the invocations are addressed, but He who is in them too.
