The description continues: the three meet — fire, the lower breath, and the upper — and from their meeting the heat blazes up. Worth noting is that here too everything is built on the meeting of three. Not one of the three gives anything by itself: fire without wind goes out, wind without fire is cold, breath without either does nothing.
This structure is constant in descriptions of the inner work and deserves mention. Nowhere in these books does the result come from one alone: always something must meet something; and the word yoga, "union," discussed when reading Tripuratapini (18), is in this sense the name of the whole science. The Vaishnava side draws from this an observation relevant to the matter. If everything that occurs, occurs from a meeting, then the highest too is not attained alone: there too a meeting is required, and a meeting presupposes two.
Separately, a word must be said about ushna-svarupaka, "whose form is heat," said of the breath. The breath is called warm; and this again is an observation available to anyone: the out-breath is warm. This whole science grew out of attention to things everyone feels and no one looks at.
