यदिदं लभ्यते शास्त्रं तदा विद्यां समाश्रयेत् । ततस्तदोदितां सिद्धिमाशु तां लभते मुनिः

Again the verb samashrayet, "shall he take refuge," and this time it is set not with the teacher, but with the science. Worth noting is this shift, for it shows how broad this word is. One takes refuge in a teacher (2.4), in the highest self (Rudra-hridaya 12), in a science.
What is common in all these cases is one thing: a-shri means "to lean on what will hold you." And so this verb, in these books, is a verb of support, not of action. Worth noting too is the word ashu, "swiftly." It stands here for the first time in two chapters: until now everything has been "gradually," "day by day," "after the end of many births." And as soon as speech turns to what is given, "swiftly" appears.
This difference, I think, is precise and recurs in all these books. What is earned goes slowly; what is given comes swiftly. Labor is measured out, a gift is instantaneous; and so in descriptions of labor there always stands a count of days, and in descriptions of mercy — "at once," "swiftly," "in that very moment." The Vaishnava side expresses this distinction in her own rule and repeats it constantly: sadhana takes years, and kripa comes in a minute. And so in her stories a man's transformation is always described as sudden — not because there was no labor, but because it is not labor that decides.
