Completing the trilogy of trials (Aruni, Upamanyu, Veda), the scripture reveals the highest fruit of guru-seva: omniscience descending as grace for selfless service. The image of Veda, ‘like an ox in the yoke,’ bearing every burden without complaint, is the perfect embodiment of forbearance (titiksha) and devotion. But Veda is especially instructive as a teacher: having himself known the hardships of discipleship, he is merciful toward his own pupils and does not burden them. This reveals that the true purpose of the harsh trial is not suffering as an end in itself, but the purification of the heart, which gives rise to compassion. A teacher who has passed through trials becomes gentle and caring, for he has known another’s pain. Herein lies the highest ideal: a devotee purified by austerity is filled not with pride but with humility and mercy (kripa) toward others. The strictness of the guru and the gentleness of the guru are not a contradiction but two sides of the love that leads the soul to perfection.
