Uttanka's return at the very last moment is a lesson in the working of grace from above in due season. The divine horse (Agni) carries him in an instant, for the Lord Himself, through His representatives, aids one who serves the guru. It is telling how close disaster came: the teacher's wife had all but cursed him for his delay — but the mercy of the gods outran her anger by a hair's breadth. Thus scripture shows that a devotee who serves sincerely is protected from above even where he himself is powerless to arrive in time. The teacher's wife's warm welcome and her blessing in place of a curse show that where there is sincere service, anger turns to grace. And once more it is confirmed that the fruit of a devotee's effort lies not in his own calculation but in the grace working through time and space for the sake of one faithful to his duty to the teacher.
