The serpents' council lays bare the great struggle between adharma and dharma unfolding at the very heart of [the race]. Facing destruction, some propose paths of lawlessness -- deceit (posing as brahmins or counselors), the killing of priests, the defiling of the sacrifice; others, the righteous, reject this: "the killing of a brahmin is not fitting," "the prevalence of adharma would destroy the whole world." Scripture thus reveals the perennial choice facing every being in distress: to save oneself through wrongdoing, or to remain within dharma. Here lies the essential lesson: even to save one's life, sin must not be committed -- above all the gravest sin, the insult and killing of a brahmin; for sin committed for the sake of deliverance only multiplies misfortune and defiles the world. Noteworthy are the words of the righteous serpents: "in adversity, the highest remedy is peace (shanti) rooted in dharma." The true way out of misfortune lies not in the contrivances of adharma but in righteousness and gentleness; and it is exactly this path that will lead to salvation through Astika. Thus among serpents, as among humans, a line runs between those who hold to dharma and those ready to trample it for gain.
