"And Vasuki, hearing then that word of the Grandfather, at the churning of the amrita took refuge with the gods. And the gods, having attained their goal, having obtained the incomparable amrita, placing my brother [Vasuki] before them, came to Prajapati. Those gods, together with king Vasuki, entreated the Grandfather: 'Let that curse not come to pass.' [And they said]: 'This Vasuki, king of the nagas, grieves because of his kin; let the curse of his mother not come upon him, O lord.' Brahma said: 'Jaratkaru will obtain as wife [a maiden named] Jaratkaru; the twice-born one born there will free the serpents from [this] curse.' Jaratkaru [the mother] said: 'Hearing that word, Vasuki, lord of serpents, gave me, O godlike one, to your great-souled father — even before the [appointed] time had come; and there you were born to me. That hour has come — from fear you must save us; and therefore you must save my brother from the fire. Let it not be in vain that I, for the sake of deliverance, was given to your wise father. What then do you think, my son?'"
