Here Jaratkaru reveals to her son the root cause of the coming destruction of the nagas — the ancient curse of their mother Kadru. It is telling that the beginning of this whole chain of misfortune is not Janamejaya's crime but a mother's anger at disobedient sons, approved by the Grandfather himself. Thus scripture traces present suffering back to a distant root: Kadru's curse doomed the serpents to perish in sacrificial fire. Here is the stern law of karma, reaching across the ages: a word of anger once spoken, especially a mother's and one sanctioned from above, inevitably bears its fruit. Note also this: Jaratkaru does not hide the truth from her son but sets it out in full — for a righteous act must arise from clear knowledge, not blind obedience; hence Astika's request, "tell me truly."
