एवम् उक्तः आस्तीकः तथा इति उक्त्वा दुःखसंतप्तं वासुकिं जीवयन् इव अब्रवीत्evam uktaḥ āstīkaḥ tathā iti uktvā duḥkhasaṃtaptaṃ vāsukiṃ jīvayan iva abravītthus addressed, Astika, saying "so be it," as if reviving the grieving Vasuki, said
अहं त्वां तस्मात् शापात् मोक्षयिष्यामि सत्यम् एतत् ब्रवीमि तेahaṃ tvāṃ tasmāt śāpāt mokṣayiṣyāmi satyam etat bravīmi teI will free you from that curse; truly I tell you this
भव स्वस्थमनाः न ते भयं विद्यते प्रयतिष्ये यथा श्रेयः भविष्यतिbhava svasthamanāḥ na te bhayaṃ vidyate prayatiṣye yathā śreyaḥ bhaviṣyatibe at ease in mind, there is no fear for you; I will strive so that there will be good fortune
नृपवरं जनमेजयं गत्वा मङ्गलयुक्ताभिः वाग्भिः तोषयिष्येnṛpavaraṃ janamejayaṃ gatvā maṅgalayuktābhiḥ vāgbhiḥ toṣayiṣyehaving gone to the best of kings, Janamejaya, I will please [him] with auspicious words
यथा सः यज्ञः निर्वर्तिष्यति संभावय मयि सर्वंyathā saḥ yajñaḥ nirvartiṣyati saṃbhāvaya mayi sarvaṃso that that sacrifice will cease; trust in me in everything

Here young Astika takes up the burden of deliverance and consoles the despairing Vasuki. His words are telling: "never has my speech uttered falsehood even in jest" — for the strength of the righteous lies in truthfulness (satya); one whose word is never false gains power over events. Here it is seen that Astika acts not by force or cunning but by "auspicious, blessed words" — that is, by wisdom, courtesy, and truth; and in this lies the very opposite of Janamejaya's wrath. Note too that where Vasuki is in despair ("my heart is breaking, I cannot tell the directions"), Astika stands firm and calm — for the righteous, established in truth, does not waver before misfortune. Thus scripture shows the image of the true deliverer: young in years but mature in wisdom, he brings not vengeance for vengeance but mercy and truth, by which alone the knot of violence is undone.
