Here we see the fruits of righteous action and a picture of proper gratitude. It is significant that the king, having renounced vengeance, is not stingy: he generously rewards everyone — the priests, and even that suta and architect who had foretold the ruin of his plan. In this lies a royal magnanimity that follows upon the taming of wrath: a heart at peace becomes a generous heart. Note also the concluding ablution (avabhritha) — the rite of purification at the close of a sacrifice; thus even this deed, darkened by vengeance, ends with a rite of cleansing. The image of Astika is beautiful too: having accomplished the greatest of deeds, he does not exalt himself but hurries to his mother and uncle and falls at their feet — a righteous man young in years and great in fame, yet remaining, in humility, a dutiful son. Here is a lesson: true greatness is joined with humility; one who has accomplished a great deed does not seek glory for himself, but returns to his kin with love and reverence, giving them the joy of his deliverance.
