Here is described the founding of the festival of Indra (Indra-maha, now known as the raising of the “banner of Indra”) — a ritual celebration bound up with king Vasu. It is telling that the rite carries a promise of prosperity: “whoever honors the festival shall gain prosperity and victory.” Here it is shown that honoring the celestial administrators (the devas), who carry out the will of the Supreme, brings worldly benefit; yet this is not the highest goal, but a lesser fruit. Note too that in the rite “out of love for Vasu, Shiva himself is also worshiped” — thus tradition weaves the worship of different deities into a single fabric of devotion. The list of Vasu's five sons, who became the founders of kingdoms (Magadha and the rest), roots the heroes yet to come (such as Jarasandha, descendant of Brihadratha) in this ancient lineage. Thus the scripture binds the mythic past to the history of the Bharatas. And the very name “the one who moves above kings” reveals the measure of Vasu's piety: a righteous king who honors the gods rises above earthly rulers and draws near to the celestials.
