Here Yayati reveals the deepest essence of renunciation — and shows that the true muni is defined not by outer place but by inner state. Striking is the paradoxical definition: truly detached is he for whom "the village is behind him," whether he lives in the forest or in the village. Here is a crucial truth: detachment (vairagya) is not in fleeing to the forest but in the heart; one can live among people and be "in the forest" (unattached), and one can live in the forest yet be "in the village" at heart (full of desires). True renunciation is inward. Also striking is that Yayati does not exalt extreme mortification of the flesh over purity of heart: even one who is bathed, adorned, yet "established in pure deeds" is worthy of honor. In the spirit of the Gita — the preference of inner effort over outer display: not the torment of the body, but the mastery of the mind and selflessness are the essence of yoga. And the crown — "silence" (mauna) as the state of one free from dualities (nirdvandva): the true muni is not one who is silent in speech, but one whose mind has fallen silent from passions and dualities (attraction and aversion). Thus the scripture teaches: the highest is inner freedom and selflessness, toward which (and through Yayati's own bitter experience) this whole conversation leads.
