Here Yayati, though falling from heaven, refuses the gift of rescue — and shows the highest nobility. It is significant that the virtuous kings (Ashtaka, Pratardana, Vasumanas) — his grandsons and descendants — offer him their heavenly worlds (their merits) in order to save him. But Yayati refuses: 'a king is a giver, not a receiver; accepting gifts is wretched for a kshatriya (and for a knower of Brahman).' Here is high dignity and fidelity to one's own dharma: even facing destruction (falling into 'hell'), Yayati will not tarnish his royal honor by accepting charity; 'having fallen into misfortune by the decree of fate, the wise man does not act basely.' This is an image of steadfastness in dharma: better to fall while keeping one's duty than to be saved by breaking it. It is telling that the very humility his fall (chapters 83-86) taught him has not turned into faintheartedness: humble before God and fate, he remains firm in his duty. Here is the harmony of humility and dignity: the truly humble one is not the one who abases himself (by accepting alms against dharma), but the one who meekly accepts the will from above while keeping faith with duty. And — providentially — this very refusal (the unwillingness to take others' merits) will lead to his rescue: as the next chapter will show, his grandsons will save him not by the 'gift' he rejected, but by their own merits, granted to their grandfather by right of kinship — and his dignity will remain untouched.
