को ऽयम् अन्नम् इदं भुङ्क्ते मदर्थम् उपकल्पितम् ॥
पश्यतो मम दुर्बुद्धिर् यियासुर् यमसादनम् ॥

The tyrant's outrage betrays his habit of unquestioned submission. It is telling that what strikes Baka is not the intruder's daring as such, but that someone dared it "before his eyes": a devourer who has never known resistance cannot believe that anyone would defy him. Here is the blindness of unchecked power: long impunity breeds certainty of one's own invincibility, and so the blow against it comes unforeseen. So the scripture shows that evil grown accustomed to its victims' submission loses its vigilance; and Baka's haughty "who dared?" is the beginning of his awakening and his end.
