ततः स भूयः संक्रुद्धो वृक्षम् आदाय राक्षसः ॥
ताडयिष्यंस् तदा भीमं पुनर् अभ्यद्रवद् बली ॥
ततो भीमः शनैर् भुक्त्वा तदन्नं पुरुषर्षभः ॥

"Then the rakshasa, growing yet more enraged, seizing a tree, rushed again to strike Bhima; and Bhima, unhurried, having finished that food and sipped water, rose for battle, joyful and mighty in strength."

Bhima keeps ritual purity even on the eve of battle. It is telling that he does not throw himself into the fight before finishing his meal, but completes it and "sips water" — performing the purification custom demands: even in a clash with a monster, the righteous does not neglect dharma. Piety is not set aside even in the hour of war: one faithful to the law keeps it even amid danger. Telling too is the word "joyful": Bhima rises for battle not in anger but in quiet joy — for him this is service, not vengeance. So the scripture shows a warrior in whom strength is joined to ritual purity and a clear spirit; and such a fighter is invulnerable in both body and soul.
