का हि सर्वेषु लोकेषु विश्रुताभिजनं नृपम् ॥

"For what maiden in all the worlds would not desire a king of renowned lineage, a lord and husband tender to the devoted? Therefore, since matters have come to this pass, ask my father Aditya — with obeisance, austerity, and self-restraint. If he should wish to give me to you, O crusher of foes, then I shall become, O king, forever obedient to you. For I am the maiden named Tapati, the younger sister of Savitri, the daughter of this lamp of the worlds, Surya, O bull among kshatriyas."

Here the maiden points her suitor toward the right path to her — through her father and through austerity. It is telling that Tapati, having acknowledged the king's worth, does not reject him but directs him: "ask my father with obeisance, austerity, and self-restraint"; love, to be realized, must pass through the path of dharma and effort. Here it is disclosed that what is desired is granted through service and humility, not seized by one's own will. Telling, too, is her promise to become "obedient" by her father's will: marriage is sacred when given by elders. So the verse shows that the path to a worthy bride lies through reverence for her father and through austerity; and Tapati, having revealed her heavenly origin, calls the king to this path.
