स गन्धर्ववचः श्रुत्वा तत् तदा भरतर्षभ ॥
अर्जुनः परया प्रीत्या पूर्णचन्द्र इवाबभौ ॥
उवाच च महेष्वासो गन्धर्वं कुरुसत्तमः ॥
जातकौतूहलो ऽतीव वसिष्ठस्य तपोबलात् ॥
वसिष्ठ इति यस्यैतद् ऋषेर् नाम त्वयेरितम् ॥
एतद् इच्छाम्य् अहं श्रोतुं यथावत् तद् वदस्व मे ॥
य एष गन्धर्वपते पूर्वेषां नः पुरोहितः ॥
आसीद् एतन् ममाचक्ष्व क एष भगवान् ऋषिः ॥

ya eṣa gandharvapate pūrveṣāṃ naḥ purohitaḥ ||
āsīd etan mamācakṣva ka eṣa bhagavān ṛṣiḥ ||

अर्जुनः परया प्रीत्या पूर्णचन्द्रः इव अबभौarjunaḥ parayā prītyā pūrṇacandraḥ iva ababhauArjuna shone with supreme joy, like the full moon;
उवाच च महेष्वासः गन्धर्वं कुरुसत्तमःuvāca ca maheṣvāsaḥ gandharvaṃ kurusattamaḥand the great archer, the foremost of the Kurus, said to the gandharva,
जातकौतूहलः अतीव वसिष्ठस्य तपोबलात्jātakautūhalaḥ atīva vasiṣṭhasya tapobalātexceedingly curious about the might of Vasishtha's austerity:
वसिष्ठः इति यस्य एतत् ऋषेः नाम त्वया ईरितम्vasiṣṭhaḥ iti yasya etat ṛṣeḥ nāma tvayā īritam"Vasishtha is the name of that sage which you have spoken;
एतत् इच्छामि अहं श्रोतुं यथावत् तत् वदस्व मेetat icchāmi ahaṃ śrotuṃ yathāvat tat vadasva methat I wish to hear -- tell it to me as it truly is;
यः एषः गन्धर्वपते पूर्वेषां नः पुरोहितःyaḥ eṣaḥ gandharvapate pūrveṣāṃ naḥ purohitaḥhe who, O lord of gandharvas, was the purohita of our forefathers --
आसीत् एतत् मम आचक्ष्व कः एषः भगवान् ऋषिःāsīt etat mama ācakṣva kaḥ eṣaḥ bhagavān ṛṣiḥtell me this: who was that blessed sage?"

अनुवाद

Vaishampayana said: "Having heard that speech of the gandharva, Arjuna, O bull of the Bharata race, shone with supreme joy, like the full moon. And, exceedingly curious about the might of Vasishtha's austerity, the great archer, the foremost of the Kurus, said to the gandharva." Arjuna said: "Vasishtha is the name of that sage which you have spoken; that I wish to hear -- tell it to me as it truly is. He, O lord of gandharvas, who was the purohita of our forefathers -- tell me this: who was that blessed sage?"
