"Therefore let there be carefully chosen as purohita a pure brahmin, foremost in dharma, a knower of Vedic dharma, virtuous. For one born a kshatriya, wishing to conquer the earth, must first appoint a purohita, O Partha, for the increase of his kingdom; a king wishing to conquer the earth must set a brahmin in the forefront. Therefore let there be for you a virtuous brahmin as purohita."

Here the story of Vasishtha turns into direct instruction to the Pandavas. It is telling that the gandharva, having praised Vasishtha, at once advises them to appoint their own purohita: the example of a great ancestor is meant to become the deed of his descendants. Here is the indication that reverence for the saints is not content with praise but imitates them: to honor Vasishtha means also to seek out a righteous teacher for oneself. Telling too is the rule to "set the brahmin in the forefront": every undertaking of a king should be preceded by spiritual guidance. Thus the scripture shows that the wisdom of tradition must be put into practice; and the gandharva's counsel prepares the Pandavas to take Dhaumya as their purohita.
