वसिष्ठ उवाच
मा भैः पुत्रि न भेतव्यं रक्षसस् ते कथं चन ॥
नैतद् रक्षो भयं यस्मात् पश्यसि त्वम् उपस्थितम् ॥
राजा कल्माषपादो ऽयं वीर्यवान् प्रथितो भुवि ॥
स एषो ऽस्मिन् वनोद्देशे निवसत्य् अतिभीषणः ॥

अनुवाद
Vasishtha said: "Do not fear, daughter; you must not fear a rakshasa at all. It is not a rakshasa-menace that you see approaching: this is King Kalmashapada, valiant, renowned on earth, who dwells in this forest region, most terrifying."

Here the sage discerns the man beneath the demon's mask. It is telling that Vasishtha, unlike his terrified daughter-in-law, sees not a rakshasa but a king possessed by one: the discerning eye distinguishes the wretched man from the evil that has taken hold of him. Here the saint hates the sin but pities the sinner: behind the monstrous deed he perceives a captive soul. Thus the text reveals the sage's discerning gaze; and Vasishtha's compassion, ready to save even the destroyer of his own sons, surpasses all vengeance.
