"Adrishyanti, seeing that one of cruel deeds before her, said this to Vasishtha in a voice shaken with fear: 'That one, like death itself, with a fierce club raised, O lord, comes this way -- a rakshasa, terrifying, approaches. No one else on earth is able to ward him off, except you now, O greatly fortunate one, best of all knowers of the Vedas. Save me, O lord, from this dreadful sinner; for the rakshasa surely intends to devour us both.'"

Here one who is terrified seeks refuge in the only one who can save her. It is telling that Adrishyanti, in her terror, does not flee but cries out to Vasishtha: "none but you is able" -- the devoted soul in distress turns to the one whose power is beyond doubt. Here is the image of refuge (sharana): the helpless one surrenders herself to the strong and the holy, and in this lies her deliverance. Telling too is that her plea is both for herself and for the unborn child in her womb: she is anxious for the family yet to come. Thus the scripture shows faith taking refuge in its protector; and Adrishyanti, bearing the hope of the line, entreats her father-in-law to shield them both from the devourer.
