स तु दृष्ट्वैव तं राजा क्रुद्ध उत्थाय भारत ॥
आविष्टो रक्षसोग्रेण इयेषात्तुं ततः स्म तम् ॥

Here misfortune overtakes the saint again, the very moment he has chosen to live. It is telling that the possessed king desired to devour Vasishtha himself -- the father of the sons he had destroyed: evil, unsated by the children, reaches now for the father too. Here it is shown that the trials of the righteous do not end with a single victory over despair: beyond it a new danger waits. Thus the scripture shows the relentlessness of evil; and Vasishtha, having returned to life for the sake of his grandson, must yet save both his daughter-in-law and himself from the devourer.
