ततः पाशैस् तदात्मानं गाढं बद्ध्वा महामुनिः ॥
तस्या जले महानद्या निममज्ज सुदुःखितः ॥
अथ छित्त्वा नदी पाशांस् तस्यारिबलमर्दन ॥
समस्थं तम् ऋषिं कृत्वा विपाशं समवासृजत् ॥
उत्ततार ततः पाशैर् विमुक्तः स महान् ऋषिः ॥
विपाशेति च नामास्या नद्याश् चक्रे महान् ऋषिः ॥
tataḥ pāśais tadātmānaṃ gāḍhaṃ baddhvā mahāmuniḥ ||
tasyā jale mahānadyā nimamajja suduḥkhitaḥ ||
atha chittvā nadī pāśāṃs tasyāribalamardana ||
samasthaṃ tam ṛṣiṃ kṛtvā vipāśaṃ samavāsṛjat ||
uttatāra tataḥ pāśair vimuktaḥ sa mahān ṛṣiḥ ||
vipāśeti ca nāmāsyā nadyāś cakre mahān ṛṣiḥ ||
"Then, having bound himself fast with ropes, the great muni plunged into the waters of that great river, deeply grieving; but the river, cutting his bonds, O crusher of enemy hosts, carried the rishi out unharmed and unbound onto the bank. Freed from his bonds, the great rishi rose from the water and gave that river the name 'Vipasha.'"

Here the river itself refuses the saint's death and unties his bonds. It is telling that the water does not drown but frees Vasishtha from his ropes: nature reveres the saint and will not let him perish. In this is a sign that the life of the righteous is kept by a higher power, and death by his own hand is not granted him. Telling too is the naming of the river "Vipasha" -- "the one who unties bonds": the site of a failed death becomes a monument to deliverance. Thus the scripture shows that one cannot escape the appointed hour; and even the elements serve to preserve the saint.
