"Walking toward the hermitage, accompanied by his daughter-in-law Adrishyanti, he suddenly heard behind him the sound of Vedic recitation, adorned with the six fully meaningful angas. 'Who is this walking behind me?' he asked. 'I, named Adrishyanti, the wife of Shakti, an ascetic,' answered his daughter-in-law."

Here, amid grief, a message of hope sounds -- the voice of the Veda. It is telling that the ear of the stricken man catches the sound of sacred recitation: where a future dawns, there the Veda is heard. In this it is seen that even in the hour of hopelessness a sign from above arrives: the recitation of the Veda, by an unseen reciter, foretells for Vasishtha an unlooked-for joy. Telling too is the appearance of the daughter-in-law, the widow of the slain Shakti devoted to austerity: faithful, she does not abandon her father-in-law. Thus the scripture shows how consolation is being prepared in the very darkness of grief; and the sound of the Veda behind Vasishtha is the first ray of his renewal.
