और्व उवाच
उक्तवान् अस्मि यां क्रोधात् प्रतिज्ञां पितरस् तदा ॥
सर्वलोकविनाशाय न सा मे वितथा भवेत् ॥
वृथारोषप्रतिज्ञो हि नाहं जीवितुम् उत्सहे ॥
अनिस्तीर्णो हि मां रोषो दहेद् अग्निर् इवारणिम् ॥

अनुवाद
Aurva said: "The vow that I uttered in anger, O ancestors -- of the destruction of all worlds -- let it not become false; for with a false vow of anger I am unable to live. Unfulfilled, the anger would burn me, as fire burns the wood of the arani."

Here the power of a given word -- a vow -- shows itself. Aurva's dilemma is telling: a vow once uttered must be fulfilled, or else, like an unkindled fire in the arani wood, it turns back upon the one who gave it. Here lies the weight of truthful speech: what is said even in anger binds, and an unfulfilled vow destroys. The scripture thus shows why a saint's anger cannot simply be dismissed -- a word, once given, demands an outcome; and it falls to the ancestors to show how the vow may be fulfilled without destroying the worlds.
