वसिष्ठ उवाच
ततस् तं क्रोधजं तात और्वो ऽग्निं वरुणालये ॥
उत्ससर्ज स चैवाप उपयुङ्क्ते महोदधौ ॥
महद् धयशिरो भूत्वा यत् तद् वेदविदो विदुः ॥
तम् अग्निम् उद्गिरन् वक्त्रात् पिबत्य् आपो महोदधौ ॥
vasiṣṭha uvāca
tatas taṃ krodhajaṃ tāta aurvo 'gniṃ varuṇālaye ||
utsasarja sa caivāpa upayuṅkte mahodadhau ||
mahad dhayaśiro bhūtvā yat tad vedavido viduḥ ||
tam agnim udgiran vaktrāt pibaty āpo mahodadhau ||
Vasishtha said: "Then Aurva released that fire born of anger into the abode of Varuna -- the ocean; and it consumes the waters in the great ocean. Having become a great horse's head, which the knowers of the Veda know, belching forth that fire from its mouth, it drinks the waters in the great ocean."

Here the saint's anger finds an eternal, harmless vessel. It is telling that Aurva's fire still burns in the ocean to this day as the "horse's head" [the submarine fire]: a destructive force, wisely directed, does not annihilate but is held within its appointed bounds. Here is the image of a passion tamed: what once threatened to destroy the worlds now serves the order of creation, contained within the waters. Thus the scripture shows that even the greatest anger can be forever pacified through wise arrangement; and the legend of the submarine fire testifies to the victory of reason over rage.
