वैशंपायन उवाच
तं प्रयान्तं महाबाहुं कौरवाणां यशस्करम् ॥
अनुजग्मुर् महात्मानो ब्राह्मणा वेदपारगाः ॥
वेदवेदाङ्गविद्वांसस् तथैवाध्यात्मचिन्तकाः ॥
चौक्षाश् च भगवद्भक्ताः सूताः पौराणिकाश् च ये ॥
कथकाश् चापरे राजञ् श्रमणाश् च वनौकसः ॥
दिव्याख्यानानि ये चापि पठन्ति मधुरं द्विजाः ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
taṃ prayāntaṃ mahābāhuṃ kauravāṇāṃ yaśaskaram ||
anujagmur mahātmāno brāhmaṇā vedapāragāḥ ||
vedavedāṅgavidvāṃsas tathaivādhyātmacintakāḥ ||
caukṣāś ca bhagavadbhaktāḥ sūtāḥ paurāṇikāś ca ye ||
kathakāś cāpare rājañ śramaṇāś ca vanaukasaḥ ||
divyākhyānāni ye cāpi paṭhanti madhuraṃ dvijāḥ ||
Vaishampayana said: "As he departed, mighty-armed, the glory of the Kuru race, he was followed by great-souled brahmins learned in the Vedas, knowers of the Vedas and the Vedangas, contemplators of the Supreme Self, the pure, devotees of the Lord, and sutas, and reciters of the Puranas, and other storytellers, and ascetics dwelling in the forests, and brahmins who sweetly recite wondrous tales."

Even into exile, the hero goes surrounded by the saintly. It is telling that Arjuna is accompanied by "devotees of the Lord" and reciters of wondrous tales: even in his wandering he is not parted from good company. Sadhu-sanga -- association with saints -- turns exile itself into pilgrimage. Thus the scripture reveals Arjuna's piety, and his saintly companions sanctify his path.
