तापसा ऊचुः
ग्राहाः पञ्च वसन्त्य् एषु हरन्ति च तपोधनान् ॥
अत एतानि वर्ज्यन्ते तीर्थानि कुरुनन्दन ॥

Here the cause of the desolation is revealed - predators destroying the holy. It is significant that the ascetics do not overcome the calamity themselves, but avoid it: the meek are not given the strength needed against violence. The defense of the holy is the duty of the kshatriya; where the ascetic is powerless, there the hand of a hero is required. Thus the scripture reveals the need for a defender; and Arjuna is called to supply it.
