गायन्त्यः वै हसन्त्यः च लोभयन्त्यः च तं द्विजम्gāyantyaḥ vai hasantyaḥ ca lobhayantyaḥ ca taṃ dvijamSinging, and laughing, and enticing that brahmin,
सः च न अस्मासु कृतवान् मनः वीर कथं चनsaḥ ca na asmāsu kṛtavān manaḥ vīra kathaṃ canabut he paid us no mind at all, O hero;
न अकम्पत महातेजाः स्थितः तपसि निर्मलेna akampata mahātejāḥ sthitaḥ tapasi nirmalethe greatly resplendent one did not waver, established in pure austerity;
सः अशपत् कुपितः अस्मान् तु ब्राह्मणः क्षत्रियर्षभsaḥ aśapat kupitaḥ asmān tu brāhmaṇaḥ kṣatriyarṣabhaand he, enraged, cursed us, that brahmin, O bull among kshatriyas:

Here one established in austerity remains unshaken before temptation. It is significant that the brahmin 'did not waver,' whereas [other] gods in another tale did not withstand Tilottama: here is the measure of true self-mastery. Here is the ideal of the ascetic for whom temptation is powerless - and the inevitability of punishment for the seducers. Thus the scripture reveals the triumph of purity over temptation; and the sin of seduction bears bitter fruit.
