वर्गोवाच
ततो वयं प्रव्यथिताः सर्वा भरतसत्तम ॥
आयाम शरणं विप्रं तं तपोधनम् अच्युतम् ॥
रूपेण वयसा चैव कन्दर्पेण च दर्पिताः ॥
अयुक्तं कृतवत्यः स्म क्षन्तुम् अर्हसि नो द्विज ॥
एष एव वधो ऽस्माकं सुपर्याप्तस् तपोधन ॥
यद् वयं संशितात्मानं प्रलोब्धुं त्वाम् इहागताः ॥
vargovāca
tato vayaṃ pravyathitāḥ sarvā bharatasattama ||
āyāma śaraṇaṃ vipraṃ taṃ tapodhanam acyutam ||
rūpeṇa vayasā caiva kandarpeṇa ca darpitāḥ ||
ayuktaṃ kṛtavatyaḥ sma kṣantum arhasi no dvija ||
eṣa eva vadho 'smākaṃ suparyāptas tapodhana ||
yad vayaṃ saṃśitātmānaṃ pralobdhuṃ tvām ihāgatāḥ ||
Varga said: "Then, distressed, we all took refuge with that brahmin ascetic; grown proud of our beauty, youth, and the god of love, we committed what was unbecoming — forgive us, O brahmin; this alone is punishment enough for us: that we came to tempt you, who had subdued yourself."

Here repentance leads those who have sinned to take refuge. It is significant that the apsarases acknowledge their fault and ask forgiveness: the first step toward deliverance is the awareness of sin. Significant, too, is the word that pride in beauty and youth drove them into wrongdoing: vanity is the root of downfall. Here lies the saving power of repentance. Thus the scripture reveals the turning of sinners toward the good; and, having acknowledged their guilt, they take refuge in mercy.
