वैशंपायन उवाच
तच् छ्रुत्वा मन्दपालस् तु तेषां वाक्यं दिवौकसाम् ॥
क्व नु शीघ्रम् अपत्यं स्याद् बहुलं चेत्य् अचिन्तयत् ॥
स चिन्तयन्न् अभ्यगच्छद् बहुलप्रसवान् खगान् ॥
शार्ङ्गिकां शार्ङ्गको भूत्वा जरितां समुपेयिवान् ॥
तस्यां पुत्रान् अजनयच् चतुरो ब्रह्मवादिनः ॥
तान् अपास्य स तत्रैव जगाम लपितां प्रति ॥
बालान् सुतान् अण्डगतान् मात्रा सह मुनिर् वने ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
tac chrutvā mandapālas tu teṣāṃ vākyaṃ divaukasām ||
kva nu śīghram apatyaṃ syād bahulaṃ cety acintayat ||
sa cintayann abhyagacchad bahulaprasavān khagān ||
śārṅgikāṃ śārṅgako bhūtvā jaritāṃ samupeyivān ||
tasyāṃ putrān ajanayac caturo brahmavādinaḥ ||
tān apāsya sa tatraiva jagāma lapitāṃ prati ||
bālān sutān aṇḍagatān mātrā saha munir vane ||
"Having heard that word of the celestials, Mandapala thought: 'Where might offspring come quickly, and in abundance?' Pondering, he went to birds of abundant brood; having become a shārṅgaka, he came to a shārṅgikā named Jarita; in her he begot four sons, versed in the Brahman; leaving them there, he went on to Lapita -- the young sons, still in eggs, with their mother, in the forest, that sage."

Here even a sage is not free from weakness -- he abandons his children. It is telling that Mandapala, scarcely having begotten them, leaves his sons and goes to another [mate]: even a great ascetic can be careless of a father's duty. But here too lies a warning: knowledge of dharma alone is not equal to its fulfillment; even one who knows his duty may at times weaken in it. So the scripture reveals Mandapala's frailty; and his lapse will only throw into sharper relief the mother's faithfulness.
