वैशंपायन उवाच
संपूज्याथाभ्यनुज्ञातो महर्षेर् वचनात् परम् ॥
प्रत्युवाचानुपूर्व्येण धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥
भगवन् न्याय्यम् आहैतं यथावद् धर्मनिश्चयम् ॥
यथाशक्ति यथान्यायं क्रियते ऽयं विधिर् मया ॥

saṃpūjyāthābhyanujñāto maharṣer vacanāt param ||
pratyuvācānupūrvyeṇa dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ||

yathāśakti yathānyāyaṃ kriyate 'yaṃ vidhir mayā ||

संपूज्य अथ अभ्यनुज्ञातःsaṃpūjya atha abhyanujñātaḥhaving honored [him] and received permission,
महा-ऋषेः वचनात् परम्mahā-ṛṣeḥ vacanāt param[in response] to the word of the great sage,
प्रत्युवाच अनुपूर्व्येणpratyuvāca anupūrvyeṇaanswered in due order
धर्म-राजः युधिष्ठिरःdharma-rājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥDharmaraja Yudhishthira:
भगवन् न्याय्यम् आह एतम्bhagavan nyāyyam āha etam"O lord, justly have you spoken this,
यथावत् धर्म-निश्चयम्yathāvat dharma-niścayamas it should be, [this] ordinance of dharma;
यथा-शक्ति यथा-न्यायम्yathā-śakti yathā-nyāyamaccording to [my] strength and according to justice
क्रियते अयम् विधिः मयाkriyate ayam vidhiḥ mayāthis ordinance is fulfilled by me."

अनुवाद
Yudhishthira said: "O lord, justly have you spoken this — as it should be, this ordinance of dharma; and according to my strength and according to justice this ordinance is fulfilled by me."

Here the king receives the instruction without resentment and without self-praise. It is significant that Yudhishthira does not answer, 'I already do all this,' but meekly acknowledges the truth of it and says he fulfills it 'according to his strength': humble acceptance of truth is the seal of the righteous. Thus the scripture shows how instruction ought to be received; and next the king honors the path of the ancestors.
