तथा समुद्राश् चत्वारो नदी भागीरथी च या ॥
कालिन्दी विदिशा वेण्णा नर्मदा वेगवाहिनी ॥
विपाशा च शतद्रुश् च चन्द्रभागा सरस्वती ॥
इरावती वितस्ता च सिन्धुर् देवनदस् तथा ॥
गोदावरी कृष्णवेण्णा कावेरी च सरिद्वरा ॥
एताश् चान्याश् च सरितस् तीर्थानि च सरांसि च ॥
tathā samudrāś catvāro nadī bhāgīrathī ca yā ||
kālindī vidiśā veṇṇā narmadā vegavāhinī ||
vipāśā ca śatadruś ca candrabhāgā sarasvatī ||
irāvatī vitastā ca sindhur devanadas tathā ||
godāvarī kṛṣṇaveṇṇā kāverī ca saridvarā ||
etāś cānyāś ca saritas tīrthāni ca sarāṃsi ca ||
"Likewise the four oceans, and the river that is Bhagirathi [the Ganga], Kalindi [the Yamuna], Vidisha, Venna, swift-flowing Narmada, Vipasha and Shatadru, Chandrabhaga, Sarasvati, Iravati, Vitasta, Sindhu — the divine river, Godavari, Krishnavenna, and Kaveri, best of rivers — these and other rivers, and sacred fords, and lakes."

Here the sacred rivers themselves stand before the lord of the waters as living worshippers. It is significant that the Ganga, the Yamuna, the Sarasvati, and the rest are not mere streams but ensouled shrines: the waters that purify the world themselves bow before the source of their own dominion. Thus scripture reveals the sanctity of the rivers and their subjection to what is higher; and the roll-call of waters continues.
