भूयः च अद्भुत-वीर्य-ओजाःbhūyaḥ ca adbhuta-vīrya-ojāḥand further, of wondrous valor and might,
धर्मम् एव अनुपालयन्dharmam eva anupālayanever guarding dharma,
किम् हितम् सर्व-लोकानाम्kim hitam sarva-lokānām"what would be the good of all the worlds?"

Here the secret of the name "Ajatashatru" is disclosed: the righteous man has no enemy, for he wrongs no one. It is telling that the king weighs the design of a great sacrifice against the question, "what is the good of all the worlds?" — even his own glory he subordinates to the common good. Thus the scripture shows that the absence of enemies is the fruit not of strength but of impartial kindness; and further the king summons a council.
