तां तु लक्ष्मीवतो लक्ष्मीं तदा यज्ञविधानजाम् ॥
तुतोष नारदः पश्यन् धर्मराजस्य धीमतः ॥
अथ चिन्तां समापेदे स मुनिर् मनुजाधिप ॥
नारदस् तं तदा पश्यन् सर्वक्षत्रसमागमम् ॥
सस्मार च पुरावृत्तां कथां तां भरतर्षभ ॥
अंशावतरणे यासौ ब्रह्मणो भवने ऽभवत् ॥
देवानां संगमं तं तु विज्ञाय कुरुनन्दन ॥
नारदः पुण्डरीकाक्षं सस्मार मनसा हरिम् ॥

tutoṣa nāradaḥ paśyan dharmarājasya dhīmataḥ ||
atha cintāṃ samāpede sa munir manujādhipa ||
nāradas taṃ tadā paśyan sarvakṣatrasamāgamam ||
sasmāra ca purāvṛttāṃ kathāṃ tāṃ bharatarṣabha ||
aṃśāvataraṇe yāsau brahmaṇo bhavane 'bhavat ||
devānāṃ saṃgamaṃ taṃ tu vijñāya kurunandana ||
nāradaḥ puṇḍarīkākṣaṃ sasmāra manasā harim ||
Narada rejoiced, seeing in the wise Dharmaraja that splendor born of the ordering of the sacrifice. And then that sage fell into thought, O lord of men: seeing that gathering of all the kshatriyas, Narada recalled the ancient story that had occurred at the "descent of the portions" in the abode of Brahma. Recognizing that gathering as an assembly of gods, O joy of the Kurus, Narada recalled in his mind the lotus-eyed Hari.

Narada alone perceives in the earthly gathering a heavenly secret: behind the appearance of kings he sees the "descent of the portions" -- the avatarana, the descent of the divine into the world. It is significant that what appears to everyone else as a congress of rulers is revealed to the knower as a council of gods, descended for the work of the earth. The verse teaches that beneath the surface of events flows another, hidden meaning, accessible only to the spiritual eye. And the first movement of the one who perceives is to recall "the lotus-eyed Hari": having recognized the divine in what is unfolding, the wise at once turn their thought to the Lord, the very center of this mystery.
