एवम् उक्ते तु भीष्मेण ततः संचुक्रुधुर् नृपाः ॥
के चिज् जहृषिरे तत्र के चिद् भीष्मं जगर्हिरे ॥
के चिद् ऊचुर् महेष्वासाः श्रुत्वा भीष्मस्य तद् वचः ॥
पापो ऽवलिप्तो वृद्धश् च नायं भीष्मो ऽर्हति क्षमाम् ॥
हन्यतां दुर्मतिर् भीष्मः पशुवत् साध्व् अयं नृपैः ॥
सर्वैः समेत्य संरब्धैर् दह्यतां वा कटाग्निना ॥

के चिद् भीष्मं जगर्हिरेke cid bhīṣmaṃ jagarhireothers reproached Bhishma;
के चिद् ऊचुर् मह-इष्वासाःke cid ūcur maha-iṣvāsāḥothers said, great bowmen,
श्रुत्वा भीष्मस्य तद् वचःśrutvā bhīṣmasya tad vacaḥhaving heard that word of Bhishma's:
पापो अवलिप्तो वृद्धश् चpāpo avalipto vṛddhaś ca"sinful, arrogant, and old,
न अयं भीष्मो अर्हति क्षमाम्na ayaṃ bhīṣmo arhati kṣamāmthis Bhishma does not deserve forbearance;
हन्यतां दुर्मतिर् भीष्मःhanyatāṃ durmatir bhīṣmaḥlet the evil-minded Bhishma be killed,
पशुवत् साध्व् अयं नृपैःpaśuvat sādhv ayaṃ nṛpaiḥlike cattle, it would be well, by kings
सर्वैः समेत्य संरब्धैर्sarvaiḥ sametya saṃrabdhairall together, having gathered, enraged,
दह्यतां वा कट-अग्निनाdahyatāṃ vā kaṭa-agnināor let him be burned by a fire of straw".

अनुवाद

When Bhishma had spoken thus, the kings grew angry; some there rejoiced, others reproached Bhishma. And others still, great bowmen, having heard that word of Bhishma's, said: "Sinful, arrogant, and old, this Bhishma does not deserve forbearance; let all the kings gather together in fury and kill the evil-minded Bhishma like cattle — or let them burn him with a fire of straw."
