"The body of man is seen as a chariot; the atman is called the charioteer, and the senses, the horses. The attentive and skillful man, with good, restrained horses, travels happily, like a wise charioteer. Whoever holds the reins of the six restless senses is the supreme charioteer. If the mind follows the wandering senses, they carry off his buddhi, as wind carries a boat upon the water. Where, through delusion, people go astray awaiting the fruit of the six senses, one who is focused and steadfast in contemplation attains the fruit born of meditation."

The image of the chariot makes discipline practical: the aim is not to kill the horses but to hold the reins. The senses are meant to serve the journey, not to drag consciousness along behind them.
