वैशंपायन उवाच
तां शमीम् उपसंगम्य पार्थो वैराटिम् अब्रवीत् ॥
सुकुमारं समाज्ञातं संग्रामे नातिकोविदम् ॥
समादिष्टो मया क्षिप्रं धनूंष्य् अवहरोत्तर ॥
नेमानि हि त्वदीयानि सोढुं शक्ष्यन्ति मे बलम् ॥
भारं वापि गुरुं हर्तुं कुञ्जरं वा प्रमर्दितुम् ॥
मम वा बाहुविक्षेपं शत्रून् इह विजेष्यतः ॥
तस्माद् भूमिंजयारोह शमीम् एतां पलाशिनीम् ॥
अस्यां हि पाण्डुपुत्राणां धनूंषि निहितान्य् उत ॥
युधिष्ठिरस्य भीमस्य बीभत्सोर् यमयोस् तथा ॥
ध्वजाः शराश् च शूराणां दिव्यानि कवचानि च ॥
अत्र चैतन् महावीर्यं धनुः पार्थस्य गाण्डिवम् ॥
एकं शतसहस्रेण संमितं राष्ट्रवर्धनम् ॥
व्यायामसहम् अत्यर्थं तृणराजसमं महत् ॥
सर्वायुधमहामात्रं शत्रुसंबाधकारकम् ॥
सुवर्णविकृतं दिव्यं श्लक्ष्णम् आयतम् अव्रणम् ॥
अलं भारं गुरुं वोढुं दारुणं चारुदर्शनम् ॥
तादृशान्य् एव सर्वाणि बलवन्ति दृढानि च ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
tāṃ śamīm upasaṃgamya pārtho vairāṭim abravīt ||
sukumāraṃ samājñātaṃ saṃgrāme nātikovidam ||
samādiṣṭo mayā kṣipraṃ dhanūṃṣy avaharottara ||
nemāni hi tvadīyāni soḍhuṃ śakṣyanti me balam ||
bhāraṃ vāpi guruṃ hartuṃ kuñjaraṃ vā pramarditum ||
mama vā bāhuvikṣepaṃ śatrūn iha vijeṣyataḥ ||
tasmād bhūmiṃjayāroha śamīm etāṃ palāśinīm ||
asyāṃ hi pāṇḍuputrāṇāṃ dhanūṃṣi nihitāny uta ||
yudhiṣṭhirasya bhīmasya bībhatsor yamayos tathā ||
dhvajāḥ śarāś ca śūrāṇāṃ divyāni kavacāni ca ||
atra caitan mahāvīryaṃ dhanuḥ pārthasya gāṇḍivam ||
ekaṃ śatasahasreṇa saṃmitaṃ rāṣṭravardhanam ||
vyāyāmasaham atyarthaṃ tṛṇarājasamaṃ mahat ||
sarvāyudhamahāmātraṃ śatrusaṃbādhakārakam ||
suvarṇavikṛtaṃ divyaṃ ślakṣṇam āyatam avraṇam ||
alaṃ bhāraṃ guruṃ voḍhuṃ dāruṇaṃ cārudarśanam ||
tādṛśāny eva sarvāṇi balavanti dṛḍhāni ca ||
Approaching that shami tree, Partha said to Vairati, whom he knew to be gentle and not very skilled in battle: 'At my command, Uttara, quickly take down the bows. This weapon of yours will not be able to bear my strength, nor carry a heavy load, nor crush an elephant, nor withstand the swing of my arms when I conquer the enemy here. Therefore, Bhumimjaya, climb this leafy shami tree; on it lie the bows of the sons of Pandu -- Yudhishthira, Bhima, Bibhatsu, and the twins -- as well as banners, the arrows of heroes, and divine armor. Here too is this mighty bow of Partha, Gandiva, equal to a hundred thousand, that increases the kingdom. It can bear the utmost strain, great as the king of grasses, the measure of all great weapons, the oppressor of enemies, divine, adorned with gold, smooth, long, without blemish, able to carry a heavy and terrible load, beautiful to behold. And all the others are just the same -- strong and sturdy.'
