चलानि हीमानि षडिन्द्रियाणि; तेषां यद् यद् वर्तते यत्र यत्र ॥
ततस् ततः स्रवते बुद्धिर् अस्य; छिद्रोदकुम्भाद् इव नित्यम् अम्भः ॥
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच
तनुर् उच्छः शिखी राजा मिथ्योपचरितो मया ॥
मन्दानां मम पुत्राणां युद्धेनान्तं करिष्यति ॥
नित्योद्विग्नम् इदं सर्वं नित्योद्विग्नम् इदं मनः ॥
यत् तत् पदम् अनुद्विग्नं तन् मे वद महामते ॥
विदुर उवाच
नान्यत्र विद्यातपसोर् नान्यत्रेन्द्रियनिग्रहात् ॥
नान्यत्र लोभसंत्यागाच् छान्तिं पश्यामि ते ऽनघ ॥
बुद्ध्या भयं प्रणुदति तपसा विन्दते महत् ॥
गुरुशुश्रूषया ज्ञानं शान्तिं त्यागेन विन्दति ॥

vidura uvāca
nānyatra vidyātapasor nānyatrendriyanigrahāt ||
nānyatra lobhasaṃtyāgāc chāntiṃ paśyāmi te 'nagha ||
buddhyā bhayaṃ praṇudati tapasā vindate mahat ||
guruśuśrūṣayā jñānaṃ śāntiṃ tyāgena vindati ||
Dhritarashtra said: 'King Yudhishthira, blazing like a flame of fire, was deceived by me. He will surely put an end, through battle, to all my wicked sons. Therefore everything seems to me fraught with danger, and my mind is full of anxiety. O you of great wisdom, tell me words that might dispel my unease.' Vidura said: 'O sinless one, I see your welfare in nothing other than knowledge and austerity, in nothing other than restraint of the senses, in nothing other than the complete abandonment of greed. Fear is dispelled by wisdom; by austerity one attains what is great and precious; by attending upon one's elders, learning is achieved; and peace is attained through renunciation. Those who desire liberation without having earned the merit obtainable through gifts, or that gained through the practice of Vedic ritual, do not live their lives free from anger and aversion. The happiness that comes from a wise course of learning, from righteous battle, and from rigorously performed austerities steadily grows in the end.'
