Dhritarashtra said: 'Tell us, O Sanjaya, of the forces of Dhrishtadyumna, and also of the Somakas and all the others with whom the Pandavas mean to fight against us.' Vaishampayana continued: 'Thus questioned, in the midst of the Kurus and in their very hall, the son of Gavalgana paused for a moment and seemed repeatedly to cast deep and distant glances; and suddenly he fainted for no apparent cause. Then, in the assembly of kings, Vidura said loudly: "Sanjaya, O great king, has fallen to the ground senseless and cannot utter a word, bereft of his senses, his mind confounded."'

This passage (5.50.11-15) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace unfolds against the backdrop of an already inevitable war. Key themes: Duryodhana, Sanjaya. Dharma here reveals itself through speech, the choice of embassy, faithfulness to promises, and the responsibility of kings for the consequences of their decisions.
