Duryodhana: ‘And formerly a boon was granted, by which their number always remained complete, however many times they were slain. And to Yudhishthira’s chariot are yoked great horses, equal in vigor and white as ivory. And to Bhimasena’s chariot are yoked steeds endowed with the speed of the wind and the splendor of the Seven Rishis.

This passage (5.56.36-40) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace is already unfolding against the backdrop of an inevitable war. Key figures: the Pandavas, Duryodhana, Karna. Dharma reveals itself here through speech, the choice of embassy, fidelity to one's word, and the responsibility kings bear for the consequences of their decisions.
