And all the townsfolk came out, lined the streets, and bowed their heads to the ground, chanting praises in his honor, O king, as Hrishikesha entered the city and passed through it. And the stately mansions, filled with noble ladies, seemed on the verge of collapsing to the ground under their living weight. This passage develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace already unfolds against the backdrop of an inevitable war. Key figures: Krishna, Duryodhana, Dhritarashtra, Karna. Dharma reveals itself here through speech, the choice of an envoy, faithfulness to one's promises, and the responsibility kings bear for the consequences of their decisions.
