Vaishampayana said: 'With Pritha's permission, and having circumambulated her, the chastiser of foes, Govinda, also called Shauri, set out for the palace of Duryodhana, which was furnished with great wealth, adorned with beautiful seats, and resembled the abode of Purandara himself — like a hilltop shining in splendor. And there he saw the mighty-armed son of Dhritarashtra seated upon his throne amid a thousand kings and surrounded by all the Kauravas; and he also saw there Duhshasana, Karna, and Shakuni the son of Subala, seated in their places beside Duryodhana. And as this scion of the Dashariha race entered the court, the son of Dhritarashtra, of great renown, rose from his seat together with his counselors to honor the slayer of Madhu. Then Keshava greeted the sons of Dhritarashtra and all his counselors, as well as all the kings present there, according to their ages, and was offered honey, curds, and water, and had palaces, mansions, and the whole kingdom placed at his service.'

This passage (5.91.1-5) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace unfolds even as war becomes inevitable. Key themes: Vidura, dharma. Here dharma reveals itself through speech, the choice of embassy, faithfulness to one's word, and the responsibility of kings for the consequences of their decisions.
