And while this mighty-armed one remained in Vidura's abode, Drona, Kripa, Bhishma, Bahlika, and many of the Kauravas came there to him. And the Kauravas who came there addressed Madhava, the heroic slayer of Madhu, saying: 'O scion of the Vrishni race, we place at your disposal our houses with all the wealth contained in them.' The slayer of Madhu, possessed of mighty energy, replied to them: 'You may go. I am deeply honored by these offers of yours.' And after all the Kurus had departed, Vidura, with great care, entertained the unconquered hero of the Dashariha race with every object of desire. Then Kunti set before the illustrious Keshava pure and delicious food in abundance. And with this, the slayer of Madhu first gave pleasure to the brahmanas. Indeed, from this food he first gave a portion, together with great wealth, to a multitude of brahmanas versed in the Vedas, and then, together with his attendants, like Vasava among the Maruts, he dined on the remainder of the pure and delicious food that Vidura had provided.

This passage (5.91.21-22) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace unfolds even as war becomes inevitable. Here dharma reveals itself through speech, the choice of embassy, faithfulness to one's word, and the responsibility of kings for the consequences of their decisions.
