'Why do you lie like a dead man, as if struck by the thunderbolt? Rise, O faint-hearted one, do not lie thus defeated. Do not vanish, wretched one; win renown by your own deed. Do not be middling and do not be the last; do not be the lowest — stand strong. Blaze up, if only for a moment, like a firebrand of tinduka wood; do not be a smoldering fire in husks, flameless, clinging to life with a wretched hope. Better to blaze for an instant than to smolder long. Be not born in any king's house pitifully soft. Having performed the deed of a man and entered the highest battle, one attains freedom from the debt of dharma and does not reproach himself. Whether they obtain what they desire or not, the wise do not grieve: they take up the next task and do not treat life as their only wealth.'

The image of the brief flame matters: the worth of a life is measured not by its length but by the brightness of duty fulfilled. Better a moment of true achievement than long smoldering without honor or purpose.
