संजय उवाच
एवम् आभाष्यमाणो ऽपि भ्रातृभिः कुरुनन्दन ॥
नोवाच वाग्यतः किं चिद् गच्छत्य् एव युधिष्ठिरः ॥
तान् उवाच महाप्राज्ञो वासुदेवो महामनाः ॥
अभिप्रायो ऽस्य विज्ञातो मयेति प्रहसन्न् इव ॥
एष भीष्मं तथा द्रोणं गौतमं शल्यम् एव च ॥
अनुमान्य गुरून् सर्वान् योत्स्यते पार्थिवो ऽरिभिः ॥
श्रूयते हि पुराकल्पे गुरून् अननुमान्य यः ॥
युध्यते स भवेद् व्यक्तम् अपध्यातो महत्तरैः ॥
अनुमान्य यथाशास्त्रं यस् तु युध्येन् महत्तरैः ॥
ध्रुवस् तस्य जयो युद्धे भवेद् इति मतिर् मम ॥

abhiprāyo 'sya vijñāto mayeti prahasann iva ||
eṣa bhīṣmaṃ tathā droṇaṃ gautamaṃ śalyam eva ca ||
anumānya gurūn sarvān yotsyate pārthivo 'ribhiḥ ||
śrūyate hi purākalpe gurūn ananumānya yaḥ ||
yudhyate sa bhaved vyaktam apadhyāto mahattaraiḥ ||
anumānya yathāśāstraṃ yas tu yudhyen mahattaraiḥ ||
dhruvas tasya jayo yuddhe bhaved iti matir mama ||

एवम् आभाष्यमाणो ऽपिevam ābhāṣyamāṇo 'pithough addressed thus; though spoken to in this way
भ्रातृभिः कुरुनन्दनbhrātṛbhiḥ kurunandanaby his brothers, joy of Kuru; by his brothers, descendant of Kuru
नोवाच वाग्यतः किं चिद्novāca vāgyataḥ kiṃ cidsaid nothing, silent; restraining his speech, gave no answer
गच्छत्य् एव युधिष्ठिरःgacchaty eva yudhiṣṭhiraḥYudhishthira continued walking; Yudhishthira kept going
तान् उवाच महाप्राज्ञोtān uvāca mahāprājñoto them said the greatly wise; he addressed them, the most learned
वासुदेवो महामनाःvāsudevo mahāmanāḥVasudeva, the great-minded; Krishna, of great intellect
अभिप्रायो ऽस्य विज्ञातोabhiprāyo 'sya vijñātohis intention is understood; his purpose is known
मयेति प्रहसन्न् इवmayeti prahasann ivaby me — thus, as if smiling; to me, he said as though with a smile
एष भीष्मं तथा द्रोणंeṣa bhīṣmaṃ tathā droṇaṃhe to Bhishma, and also to Drona; he to Bhishma and Drona
गौतमं शल्यम् एव चgautamaṃ śalyam eva cato Gautama and to Shalya; to Kripa and to Shalya
अनुमान्य गुरून् सर्वान्anumānya gurūn sarvānhaving asked leave of all the elders; having honored all the teachers
योत्स्यते पार्थिवो ऽरिभिःyotsyate pārthivo 'ribhiḥthe king will fight with the enemies; the sovereign will enter battle
श्रूयते हि पुराकल्पेśrūyate hi purākalpefor it is heard in the ancient tradition; it is known from the old rule
गुरून् अननुमान्य यःgurūn ananumānya yaḥthat he who, without asking leave of his elders; who, without permission from the elders
युध्यते स भवेद् व्यक्तम्yudhyate sa bhaved vyaktamfights, that one becomes clearly; he turns out undoubtedly
अपध्यातो महत्तरैःapadhyāto mahattaraiḥcondemned by the great ones; unblessed by the elders
अनुमान्य यथाशास्त्रंanumānya yathāśāstraṃhaving asked leave, according to the shastra; having received permission by the rule
यस् तु युध्येन् महत्तरैःyas tu yudhyen mahattaraiḥbut he who fights with the elders; whoever enters battle with the great ones
ध्रुवस् तस्य जयो युद्धेdhruvas tasya jayo yuddhehis victory in battle is certain; his victory is firm
भवेद् इति मतिर् ममbhaved iti matir mamait will be — such is my opinion; such is my judgment
अनुवाद

Sanjaya said: "Though his brothers spoke to him thus, Yudhishthira, restraining his speech, said nothing and continued walking. Then the greatly wise and great-minded Vasudeva said to them, as if smiling: 'I have understood his intention. This king, having asked leave of Bhishma, Drona, Gautama-Kripa, Shalya, and all the elders, will fight the enemy. For it is heard from ancient tradition: whoever fights without asking leave of his elders is clearly condemned by the great ones. But whoever, according to the shastra, having received the elders' permission, enters battle with them, his victory in the fight is certain. Such is my opinion.'"
