अनुमान्याथ कौन्तेयो मातुलं मद्रकेश्वरम् ॥
निर्जगाम महासैन्याद् भ्रातृभिः परिवारितः ॥
वासुदेवस् तु राधेयम् आहवे ऽभिजगाम वै ॥
तत एनम् उवाचेदं पाण्डवार्थे गदाग्रजः ॥
श्रुतं मे कर्ण भीष्मस्य द्वेषात् किल न योत्स्यसि ॥
अस्मान् वरय राधेय यावद् भीष्मो न हन्यते ॥
हते तु भीष्मे राधेय पुनर् एष्यसि संयुगे ॥
धार्तराष्ट्रस्य साहाय्यं यदि पश्यसि चेत् समम् ॥
कर्ण उवाच
न विप्रियं करिष्यामि धार्तराष्ट्रस्य केशव ॥
त्यक्तप्राणं हि मां विद्धि दुर्योधनहितैषिणम् ॥
संजय उवाच
तच् छ्रुत्वा वचनं कृष्णः संन्यवर्तत भारत ॥
युधिष्ठिरपुरोगैश् च पाण्डवैः सह संगतः ॥

tata enam uvācedaṃ pāṇḍavārthe gadāgrajaḥ ||
śrutaṃ me karṇa bhīṣmasya dveṣāt kila na yotsyasi ||
asmān varaya rādheya yāvad bhīṣmo na hanyate ||
hate tu bhīṣme rādheya punar eṣyasi saṃyuge ||
dhārtarāṣṭrasya sāhāyyaṃ yadi paśyasi cet samam ||
karṇa uvāca
na vipriyaṃ kariṣyāmi dhārtarāṣṭrasya keśava ||
tyaktaprāṇaṃ hi māṃ viddhi duryodhanahitaiṣiṇam ||
saṃjaya uvāca
tac chrutvā vacanaṃ kṛṣṇaḥ saṃnyavartata bhārata ||
yudhiṣṭhirapurogaiś ca pāṇḍavaiḥ saha saṃgataḥ ||

अनुमान्याथ कौन्तेयोanumānyātha kaunteyohaving then honored Kaunteya; having received permission, the son of Kunti
मातुलं मद्रकेश्वरम्mātulaṃ madrakeśvaramhis uncle, the lord of the Madras; Shalya, the king of Madra
निर्जगाम महासैन्याद्nirjagāma mahāsainyādwent forth from the great army; left the vast army
भ्रातृभिः परिवारितःbhrātṛbhiḥ parivāritaḥsurrounded by his brothers; accompanied by his brothers
वासुदेवस् तु राधेयम्vāsudevas tu rādheyamVasudeva, however, to the son of Radha; Krishna to Karna
आहवे ऽभिजगाम वैāhave 'bhijagāma vaiapproached in the battle; drew near on the field
तत एनम् उवाचेदंtata enam uvācedaṃthen said this to him; after that spoke to him
पाण्डवार्थे गदाग्रजःpāṇḍavārthe gadāgrajaḥfor the sake of the Pandavas, the elder brother of Gada; for the good of the Pandavas, Krishna
श्रुतं मे कर्ण भीष्मस्यśrutaṃ me karṇa bhīṣmasyaI have heard, Karna, of Bhishma; I have heard, O Karna
द्वेषात् किल न योत्स्यसिdveṣāt kila na yotsyasithat out of hatred you will supposedly not fight; that you refuse to fight from enmity
अस्मान् वरय राधेयasmān varaya rādheyachoose us, son of Radha; take our side
यावद् भीष्मो न हन्यतेyāvad bhīṣmo na hanyateuntil Bhishma is slain; until Bhishma's death
हते तु भीष्मे राधेयhate tu bhīṣme rādheyabut when Bhishma is slain, Radheya; after Bhishma falls
पुनर् एष्यसि संयुगेpunar eṣyasi saṃyugeyou may come again to battle; return to the fight
धार्तराष्ट्रस्य साहाय्यंdhārtarāṣṭrasya sāhāyyaṃhelp to the son of Dhritarashtra; support for Duryodhana
यदि पश्यसि चेत् समम्yadi paśyasi cet samamif then you consider it right; if you deem it fair
कर्ण उवाचkarṇa uvācaKarna said; Karna spoke
न विप्रियं करिष्यामिna vipriyaṃ kariṣyāmiI will not do anything displeasing; I will not act against
धार्तराष्ट्रस्य केशवdhārtarāṣṭrasya keśavato the son of Dhritarashtra, O Keshava; to Duryodhana, O Krishna
त्यक्तप्राणं हि मां विद्धिtyaktaprāṇaṃ hi māṃ viddhiknow me as one who has given up his life; consider me ready to die
दुर्योधनहितैषिणम्duryodhanahitaiṣiṇamseeking Duryodhana's welfare; seeking Duryodhana's benefit
संजय उवाचsaṃjaya uvācaSanjaya said; Sanjaya spoke
तच् छ्रुत्वा वचनं कृष्णःtac chrutvā vacanaṃ kṛṣṇaḥhaving heard those words, Krishna; having heard this answer
संन्यवर्तत भारतsaṃnyavartata bhārataturned back, O Bharata; returned, descendant of Bharata
युधिष्ठिरपुरोगैश् चyudhiṣṭhirapurogaiś caand with those led by Yudhishthira; with those whose foremost was Yudhishthira
पाण्डवैः सह संगतःpāṇḍavaiḥ saha saṃgataḥjoined together with the Pandavas; met again with the Pandavas
अनुवाद

Having honored his uncle, the lord of the Madras, Kaunteya went forth from the great army accompanied by his brothers. Vasudeva, meanwhile, approached Radheya-Karna on the battlefield and, for the sake of the Pandavas, said to him: "O Karna, I have heard that out of hatred for Bhishma you will not fight. Take our side, son of Radha, until Bhishma is slain. Once Bhishma has fallen, you may come again to the battle and help the son of Dhritarashtra, if you think it right." Karna said: "O Keshava, I will do nothing displeasing to the son of Dhritarashtra. Know that I have already given up my life and seek only Duryodhana's welfare." Having heard these words, Krishna turned back and rejoined the Pandavas, whom Yudhishthira led.
