स विगाह्य चमूं शत्रोः शरशक्तिसमाकुलाम् ॥
भीष्मम् एवाभ्ययात् तूर्णं भ्रातृभिः परिवारितः ॥
तम् उवाच ततः पादौ कराभ्यां पीड्य पाण्डवः ॥
भीष्मं शांतनवं राजा युद्धाय समुपस्थितम् ॥
युधिष्ठिर उवाच
आमन्त्रये त्वां दुर्धर्ष योत्स्ये तात त्वया सह ॥
अनुजानीहि मां तात आशिषश् च प्रयोजय ॥
भीष्म उवाच
यद्य् एवं नाभिगच्छेथा युधि मां पृथिवीपते ॥
शपेयं त्वां महाराज पराभावाय भारत ॥
प्रीतो ऽस्मि पुत्र युध्यस्व जयम् आप्नुहि पाण्डव ॥
यत् ते ऽभिलषितं चान्यत् तद् अवाप्नुहि संयुगे ॥
व्रियतां च वरः पार्थ किम् अस्मत्तो ऽभिकाङ्क्षसि ॥
एवं गते महाराज न तवास्ति पराजयः ॥
अर्थस्य पुरुषो दासो दासस् त्व् अर्थो न कस्य चित् ॥
इति सत्यं महाराज बद्धो ऽस्म्य् अर्थेन कौरवैः ॥
अतस् त्वां क्लीबवद् वाक्यं ब्रवीमि कुरुनन्दन ॥
हृतो ऽस्म्य् अर्थेन कौरव्य युद्धाद् अन्यत् किम् इच्छसि ॥
युधिष्ठिर उवाच
मन्त्रयस्व महाप्राज्ञ हितैषी मम नित्यशः ॥
युध्यस्व कौरवस्यार्थे ममैष सततं वरः ॥
भीष्म उवाच
राजन् किम् अत्र साह्यं ते करोमि कुरुनन्दन ॥
कामं योत्स्ये परस्यार्थे ब्रूहि यत् ते विवक्षितम् ॥
युधिष्ठिर उवाच
कथं जयेयं संग्रामे भवन्तम् अपराजितम् ॥
एतन् मे मन्त्रय हितं यदि श्रेयः प्रपश्यसि ॥
भीष्म उवाच
न तं पश्यामि कौन्तेय यो मां युध्यन्तम् आहवे ॥
विजयेत पुमान् कश् चिद् अपि साक्षाच् छतक्रतुः ॥
युधिष्ठिर उवाच
हन्त पृच्छामि तस्मात् त्वां पितामह नमो ऽस्तु ते ॥
जयोपायं ब्रवीहि त्वम् आत्मनः समरे परैः ॥
भीष्म उवाच
न शत्रुं तात पश्यामि समरे यो जयेत माम् ॥
न तावन् मृत्युकालो मे पुनरागमनं कुरु ॥

yady evaṃ nābhigacchethā yudhi māṃ pṛthivīpate ||
śapeyaṃ tvāṃ mahārāja parābhāvāya bhārata ||
prīto 'smi putra yudhyasva jayam āpnuhi pāṇḍava ||
yat te 'bhilaṣitaṃ cānyat tad avāpnuhi saṃyuge ||
vriyatāṃ ca varaḥ pārtha kim asmatto 'bhikāṅkṣasi ||
evaṃ gate mahārāja na tavāsti parājayaḥ ||
arthasya puruṣo dāso dāsas tv artho na kasya cit ||
iti satyaṃ mahārāja baddho 'smy arthena kauravaiḥ ||
atas tvāṃ klībavad vākyaṃ bravīmi kurunandana ||
hṛto 'smy arthena kauravya yuddhād anyat kim icchasi ||
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca
mantrayasva mahāprājña hitaiṣī mama nityaśaḥ ||
yudhyasva kauravasyārthe mamaiṣa satataṃ varaḥ ||
bhīṣma uvāca
rājan kim atra sāhyaṃ te karomi kurunandana ||
kāmaṃ yotsye parasyārthe brūhi yat te vivakṣitam ||
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca
kathaṃ jayeyaṃ saṃgrāme bhavantam aparājitam ||
etan me mantraya hitaṃ yadi śreyaḥ prapaśyasi ||
bhīṣma uvāca
na taṃ paśyāmi kaunteya yo māṃ yudhyantam āhave ||
vijayeta pumān kaś cid api sākṣāc chatakratuḥ ||
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca
hanta pṛcchāmi tasmāt tvāṃ pitāmaha namo 'stu te ||
jayopāyaṃ bravīhi tvam ātmanaḥ samare paraiḥ ||
bhīṣma uvāca
na śatruṃ tāta paśyāmi samare yo jayeta mām ||
na tāvan mṛtyukālo me punarāgamanaṃ kuru ||
Yudhishthira entered the enemy's army, filled with arrows and darts, and, surrounded by his brothers, went swiftly straight to Bhishma. Clasping the feet of the son of Shantanu, who stood ready for battle, the Pandava said: "O unassailable one, O father, I ask leave of you: I shall fight against you. Grant me your permission and bestow your blessing." Bhishma answered: "If you had not come to me before the battle, lord of the earth, I would have cursed you to defeat, great king. I am pleased with you, my son. Fight, O Pandava, and win victory. Obtain in battle whatever else you desire, and choose a boon: what do you wish from me? Since matters stand thus, great king, no defeat awaits you. This is the truth: man is the slave of wealth, but wealth is no one's slave. I am bound by the maintenance of the Kauravas. Therefore, O joy of Kuru, I speak to you as though I were powerless: I am held by their riches. What, besides battle, do you desire?" Yudhishthira said: "O greatly wise one, ever wishing my good, counsel me; fight for the sake of the Kaurava. This is my constant wish." Bhishma said: "O king, what help can I give you here? Though I fight for another's cause, tell me what you wish." Yudhishthira asked: "How could I defeat you, unconquered as you are, in battle? Give me useful counsel, if you see any good in this." Bhishma answered: "O Kaunteya, I see no one who could defeat me while I am fighting, even were it Indra himself." Yudhishthira said: "Then I ask you, O grandfather; homage to you. Tell me by what means the enemy could defeat you in battle." Bhishma replied: "My son, I see no enemy who could defeat me in battle. The time of my death has not yet come. Come back again."
