संजय उवाच
पुत्रेण तव राजेन्द्र स तथोक्तो महाबलः ॥
महत्या सेनया गुप्तः प्रायाद् भीमरथं प्रति ॥
ताम् आपतन्तीं सहसा कलिङ्गानां महाचमूम् ॥
रथनागाश्वकलिलां प्रगृहीतमहायुधाम् ॥
भीमसेनः कलिङ्गानाम् आर्छद् भारत वाहिनीम् ॥
केतुमन्तं च नैषादिम् आयान्तं सह चेदिभिः ॥
ततः श्रुतायुः संक्रुद्धो राज्ञा केतुमता सह ॥
आससाद रणे भीमं व्यूढानीकेषु चेदिषु ॥
रथैर् अनेकसाहस्रैः कलिङ्गानां जनाधिपः ॥
अयुतेन गजानां च निषादैः सह केतुमान् ॥
भीमसेनं रणे राजन् समन्तात् पर्यवारयत् ॥
चेदिमत्स्यकरूषाश् च भीमसेनपुरोगमाः ॥
अभ्यवर्तन्त सहसा निषादान् सह राजभिः ॥
ततः प्रववृते युद्धं घोररूपं भयानकम् ॥
प्रजानन् न च योधान् स्वान् परस्परजिघांसया ॥
घोरम् आसीत् ततो युद्धं भीमस्य सहसा परैः ॥
यथेन्द्रस्य महाराज महत्या दैत्यसेनया ॥
तस्य सैन्यस्य संग्रामे युध्यमानस्य भारत ॥
बभूव सुमहाञ् शब्दः सागरस्येव गर्जतः ॥
अन्योन्यस्य तदा योधा निकृन्तन्तो विशां पते ॥
महीं चक्रुश् चितां सर्वां शशशोणितसंनिभाम् ॥
योधांश् च स्वान् परान् वापि नाभ्यजानञ् जिघांसया ॥
स्वान् अप्य् आददते स्वाश् च शूराः समरदुर्जयाः ॥
विमर्दः सुमहान् आसीद् अल्पानां बहुभिः सह ॥
कलिङ्गैः सह चेदीनां निषादैश् च विशां पते ॥
कृत्वा पुरुषकारं तु यथाशक्ति महाबलाः ॥
भीमसेनं परित्यज्य संन्यवर्तन्त चेदयः ॥
सर्वैः कलिङ्गैर् आसन्नः संनिवृत्तेषु चेदिषु ॥
स्वबाहुबलम् आस्थाय न न्यवर्तत पाण्डवः ॥
न चचाल रथोपस्थाद् भीमसेनो महाबलः ॥
शितैर् अवाकिरन् बाणैः कलिङ्गानां वरूथिनीम् ॥

putreṇa tava rājendra sa tathokto mahābalaḥ ||
mahatyā senayā guptaḥ prāyād bhīmarathaṃ prati ||
tām āpatantīṃ sahasā kaliṅgānāṃ mahācamūm ||
rathanāgāśvakalilāṃ pragṛhītamahāyudhām ||
bhīmasenaḥ kaliṅgānām ārchad bhārata vāhinīm ||
ketumantaṃ ca naiṣādim āyāntaṃ saha cedibhiḥ ||
tataḥ śrutāyuḥ saṃkruddho rājñā ketumatā saha ||
āsasāda raṇe bhīmaṃ vyūḍhānīkeṣu cediṣu ||
rathair anekasāhasraiḥ kaliṅgānāṃ janādhipaḥ ||
ayutena gajānāṃ ca niṣādaiḥ saha ketumān ||
bhīmasenaṃ raṇe rājan samantāt paryavārayat ||
cedimatsyakarūṣāś ca bhīmasenapurogamāḥ ||
abhyavartanta sahasā niṣādān saha rājabhiḥ ||
tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṃ ghorarūpaṃ bhayānakam ||
prajānan na ca yodhān svān parasparajighāṃsayā ||
ghoram āsīt tato yuddhaṃ bhīmasya sahasā paraiḥ ||
yathendrasya mahārāja mahatyā daityasenayā ||
tasya sainyasya saṃgrāme yudhyamānasya bhārata ||
babhūva sumahāñ śabdaḥ sāgarasyeva garjataḥ ||
anyonyasya tadā yodhā nikṛntanto viśāṃ pate ||
mahīṃ cakruś citāṃ sarvāṃ śaśaśoṇitasaṃnibhām ||
yodhāṃś ca svān parān vāpi nābhyajānañ jighāṃsayā ||
svān apy ādadate svāś ca śūrāḥ samaradurjayāḥ ||
vimardaḥ sumahān āsīd alpānāṃ bahubhiḥ saha ||
kaliṅgaiḥ saha cedīnāṃ niṣādaiś ca viśāṃ pate ||
kṛtvā puruṣakāraṃ tu yathāśakti mahābalāḥ ||
bhīmasenaṃ parityajya saṃnyavartanta cedayaḥ ||
sarvaiḥ kaliṅgair āsannaḥ saṃnivṛtteṣu cediṣu ||
svabāhubalam āsthāya na nyavartata pāṇḍavaḥ ||
na cacāla rathopasthād bhīmaseno mahābalaḥ ||
śitair avākiran bāṇaiḥ kaliṅgānāṃ varūthinīm ||
Sanjaya said: ‘Thus commanded by your son, O lord of kings, the mighty commander, protected by a great army, advanced toward Bhima's chariot. Bhimasena met this suddenly charging, immense army of the Kalingas, teeming with chariots, elephants, and horses and bearing great weapons raised, as well as Ketumant the Naishadha, who was advancing together with the Chedis. Then the enraged Shrutayus, together with King Ketumant, assailed Bhima in battle amid the arrayed Chedis. The ruler of Kalinga, with many thousands of chariots, and Ketuman, with ten thousand elephants and the Nishadas, surrounded Bhimasena from every side, O king. The Chedis, Matsyas, and Karushas, with Bhimasena at their head, suddenly advanced against the Nishadas and their kings. Then a fierce and terrible battle began; out of the desire to slay one another, the warriors no longer recognized their own men. Bhima's battle with his enemies grew as dreadful as Indra's battle with the great army of Daityas, O great king. From that fighting host arose a tremendous roar, like that of a bellowing ocean. The warriors, cutting one another down, covered the whole earth with a redness like the blood of hares, O lord of men. In their thirst for slaughter they did not distinguish friend from foe; even their own struck their own — heroes unconquerable in battle. A vast crush occurred as the few Chedis met the many Kalingas and Nishadas. The mighty Chedis, having shown valor to the extent of their strength, abandoned Bhimasena and withdrew. But the Pandava, surrounded by all the Kalingas after the Chedis' retreat, relying on the strength of his own arms, did not turn back. Mighty Bhimasena did not move from the platform of his chariot and showered the Kalingas' battle lines with sharp arrows.’
